Chroma decoration examplesIn its simplest terms, CHROMA is a direct digital imprint decoration method offered by Devara used to embellish retractable badge reels and office accessories. It allows for a wide range of full-color decorations, is durable, and a very affordable decorating option when you are trying to keep your eye on the bottom line.

The CHROMA decoration method offers a wide array of positive attributes and is a terrific option for many customers, for others however, it is not. CHROMA decoration may not be the best imprint method for reasons that include logo size, imprints that contain small text, and in some cases overall design needs.

Other imprint methods such as Label and Polydome have fewer “rules” than CHROMA, and because of that, CHROMA can present unique challenges when it comes to creating an embellishment that translates well. At the core, however, there are only two main differences between CHROMA and other decorating methods; those differences are imprint size and bleed. To better explain some of the restrictions of CHROMA, see the illustration below.

Both of the badge reels above have essentially the same art. For the purposes of this demonstration, the same logo has been used. The badge reel on the left is an example of a CHROMA imprint. The badge reel on the right demonstrates what the same art would look like if the same logo was imprinted as a Label or Polydome.

Aside from the logo on the left being slightly smaller, there is no printed background behind it. That is because the CHROMA decorating method does not allow for bleeds or edge-to-edge printing. This is due to the face of the badge reel being slightly recessed. The recessed lip prevents the CHROMA machine from printing close to the edge of the imprint area.

For this demonstration, we have chosen a logo that is visible and attractive on both a colored reel and a white background. Depending on your art, and the color of the product you select, adjustments to your art may be necessary.

Things to remember when choosing CHROMA as a decorating method

  • The background of the art is always the same color as the color of the reel or accessory.
  • Make sure you have chosen an appropriate color reel for your artwork, or that you have changed your art so that it is visible on the item you have selected. For example, a dark blue print will not be visible on a black reel.
  • A CHROMA embellishment is smaller than a Label or Polydome. Edge-to-edge printing is not possible with the CHROMA process.
  • Small or very fine text may fill in with CHROMA printing as it is a “wet” process. Be sure that any text is large enough to be legible.

We understand that choosing the proper decoration method can be confusing so if you have any questions regarding your art and how it will print on a product, please feel free to contact us.
